Portugal Walking Tour
Discover southern Portugal’s culture, cuisine, and coastal beauty on a small-group walking tour along the Fishermen’s Trail—where history, wine, and ocean views meet laid-back charm.
Overview
The Algarve region of southern Portugal is reminiscent of California in the 1980s – with its relaxed, laid-back West Coast vibe. You’ll marvel at the area’s rich history – from the beginnings of the slave trade, to the exploits of pirates, the Roman Empire, and the Portuguese people’s vast world exploration and conquests. Apart from fabulous day hikes, you’ll have time to explore fascinating fishing villages and historic Lagos – our favorite town in southern Portugal. Beautiful beaches, spectacular coastal and mountain walks, charming fishing towns, a glorious mild climate, and excellent cuisine make for a perfect walking adventure.
What to Expect
You’ll feel like you are hiking and hanging out with a fun group of like-minded friends, as we attract an incredible group of people on our tours. We know you’ll enjoy getting to know your guides, Gary & Katarina. Each day's hike averages 8 miles, with short ascents and descents. Unlike the trails in the Dolomites, there are not many places to “escape” once on the Fisherman’s trail, so people should be in decent shape and comfortable on a variety of terrains.
You’ll spend three of the eight nights in a fabulous 4-star hotel in the historic old town area of Lagos, a picturesque coastal town and a historical gem that captivates visitors worldwide. We have found Lagos to be a great base, yet you’ll also stay in the Serra de Monchique mountains in a 3-star lodge with great views, a historic 4-star hotel on the sea cliffs in Sagres, and a 3-star beachside apartment in the fishing village of Salema, allowing us to enjoy the best villages and accommodation while limiting drive times to our daily hikes.
You’ll have time in the afternoons to explore the villages you’ll stay in, or take a walk on the beach, relax by the hotel pool, and we’ll give you our recommendations for where to have a fabulous dinner in the evenings.
